"VANCOUVER — A sold out metal show usually means you’re in for some wicked shit, and expectations were high for this dynamic double bill.
TesseracT and Gojira did not disappoint, rampaging into the Vogue Theatre, while the audience ate up the riffs, the vibe, and the power.
British prog-metallers TesseracT started things off with a well-staged performance. It was like being adrift in space thanks to such a technically proficient combination of musicians. Guitarist Alec Kahney was expressive and dramatic (though sincere) as he belted out over epic earth-shakers like “Concealing Fate Part 2: The Deception.” The whole band was theatrically backlit beneath a flawlessly executed light show. It would have been nice to hear a bit more guitar in the mix but if you haven’t seen these guys yet, you’ve done yourself a disservice.
Opening with projected footage of an erupting volcano, Gojira were a natural disaster wielding guitars. This French band’s aggressive mix of death, black, and groove metal is a deadly weapon. Brothers Joe and Mario Duplantier are a powerful duo. Joe tears your skin off with his voice while pummeling you with waves of sonic violence. The drumming of Mario is a sight to behold, a truly wicked machine especially on the relentless “Heaviest Matter In the Universe.” The band played the majority of their latest record Magma live while mixing in favorites like “Backbone” and “Vacuity.” Bassist Jean-Michel Labadie was fun to watch, marching and jumping off the drum riser with intensity. With the exception of one short technical error with the projector, Gojira lived up to their namesake: big, crushing, and angry."
